Germany's Thiele: "We're ready for the match against Japan" and "Sekita is always perfect" - Post-match interview after the Wagner Memorial Cup 2024 match against Egypt

July 16, 2024

Result: Germany-Egypt 3-1 (25-14, 26-24, 17-25, 25-19)
Johannes Thiele played the full match as setter from the third set to the end.

Toshiki: How do you feel looking back on today's game?

Tille: We underestimated them a little bit at the end of the first set and lost our concentration. After that, they started serving without fear of making mistakes. They had really strong serves. On the other hand, we didn't put enough pressure on them. If we had been able to stay focused throughout the match, we could have won 3-0.

TOSHIKI: How do you feel looking back on the tournament as a whole?

Tillet: I think it was a good preparation for us (for the Paris Olympics). We could have won the first two games. We lost the game by a narrow margin of 2-3. But these games were also very good opportunities to learn what areas we still need to improve. So I think this tournament was a very good experience for us.

Toshiki: Are you ready for the opening match against Japan at the Paris Olympics?

Tillet: I think we are ready for the match against Japan. I don't know how well they will perform in a 9am match, but I think this is something that neither of us have ever done before. They have a lot going for them, so I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait.

Toshiki: You and Lucas Kampa are both great setters, but what are your strengths compared to him?

Tillet: My strength is using the middle from anywhere. He's been playing the same way since this year, but I think I can do it better. I'm also a little younger than him, so I think I can bring a different energy to the court. But I don't think our game plans are that different.

Toshiki: Is there a setter you look up to?

Tillet: For me the best setter in the world is Dececco (Argentina). I love watching him play. He can really set from anywhere and to anywhere. Just amazing.

Toshiki: What do you think about Japan's Sekita?

Tille: Sekita is also a great setter. I think he struggles with blocking sometimes, but the Japanese team solves this problem with great defense. As for the accuracy of the toss, he can do whatever he wants and it's always perfect. I think he's a great setter.
