The qualifying round for the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship (World Volleyball) will be held on Saturday, September 13th, with Japan facing off against Türkiye.
Japan started with outside hitters (OH) Ishikawa Yuki and Takahashi Ai, middle blockers (MB) Onodera Futoshi and Evadedan Larry, opposite (OP) Miyaura Kento, setter (S) Oya Maki, and libero (L) Yamamoto Tomohiro.
In the first set, Japan took the lead with a service ace from OP Miyaura. However, Turkey took the lead 10-12 with consecutive points, including aces, from a powerful serve from OH Manduraci. Japan continued to struggle to score against Turkey's block and defense, while Turkey continued to score with attacks from their three side attackers to take the first set 19-25.
In the second set, Turkey took the lead at the start, but then mistakes by Turkey and attacks by OP Miyaura put Japan ahead 10-9. However, Turkey's consecutive blocks put Turkey back in the lead at 12-15, and then OP Lagumjia and others scored attacks from block defenses to widen the gap to 15-20. From there, relief server OH Kai scored consecutive points from his serve to bring Japan within one point at 19-20, but OP Lagumjia finally scored an attack in a rally to give Turkey the set 23-25.
In the third set, Japan replaced MB Onodera with MB Nishimoto from the start. The early stages were a back-and-forth battle, with Japan scoring mainly through OH Ishikawa and Turkey through OP Lagumjia. However, midway through the set, a service ace from OP Lagumjia and some Japanese mistakes allowed Turkey to extend their lead to 14-19. A service ace from OH Manduraci further widened the gap towards the end, and finally, a weak attack from OP Lagumjia was blocked out, giving Turkey the win at 19-25.
As a result, Japan lost to Türkiye 0-3.
