October 6, 2021

The Polish men's volleyball first division, Plusliga, kicked off on October 2nd! A total of 14 teams compete in this league, and seven matches have been played since the first week.

Pulsliga Week 1 Results
Lublin - Jastrzebski Wenger 1-3
Olsztyn – Resovia Rzeszów 0-3
Nysa - Zaksa Kędziedzyn-Kozile 0-3
Zawierce - Suwalki 3-1
Katowice - Gdansk 3-2
Radom – Warsaw 0-3
Rubin - Sukra Beukhatov 1-3

Last season's top teams all got off to a good start. Winner Jastrzębski Węgyel lost a set to Lublin, who had been promoted from the second division, but won thanks to the efforts of Fornal and the new French gold medal trio (Toniutti, Klewno, Boyer). Zaksa, who were runners-up in the domestic league last season but went on to win the European Champions League, saw their new signing Janusz, a candidate for the national team's starting setter, skillfully manipulate his powerful attackers to easily win against Nysa. Last year's third-placed Warsaw, led by renowned coach Anastasi, also won in straight sets against Radom, scoring points mainly with Kuforek and Petkovic.

Fornal is the key player in Jastrzebski Wenger's offense and defense

Rubin, with setter Sekita Masahiro making his Polish league debut, played against the prestigious Skra Bełchatow in the first match, winning one set and taking the fourth and final set to deuce, but they couldn't get close and lost 1-3. Skra's setter Womachi's skillful pitching shone through, with all attackers scoring double digits. Sekita started the game, but was disappointed to be taken off midway through. Rubin was ranked low last season, so they will continue to face strong opponents in the future, but I hope they will do their best to get their first win in an overseas challenge! Next up is an away game against Warsaw, who came in third last time, on the 8th (Fri)!

Still, I'm really happy to see a Japanese player playing in Poland for the first time in two seasons since Taichiro Koga left! I'll continue to support you!
