What is "jump power"?

May 7, 2020

In sports where "height" matters, such as volleyball and basketball,Jumping PowerThis will be a great weapon to set you apart from other players.

However, I don't think there are many people who can properly explain what jumping power is and what you should train to improve it. So, this time I would like to give a simple explanation of jumping power. In this article, I will limit the jump to vertical jumps.

What is Jumping Power?

Jumping power is also called leaping power, and when it comes to vertical jumps, it is generally interpreted as the power to indicate how high one can jump vertically. Also, "how high one can jump" can be rephrased as how much one can push one's body up vertically. In other words, jumping power isThe force that moves your center of gravity vertically due to the rebound force (ground reaction force) generated when you push (kick) the ground with your footWe can say that (Figure).

The force that moves an object = power = work rate

The force that moves an object is a mechanical term.PowerIn Japanese,PowerIt is called.

In physics, work means "applying force to an object to make it move." Even if you apply force, if the object does not move, it is not considered work.

図2

As shown in the diagram, if you apply a force of 3 in the direction of the arrow and move the object a distance of 5, then 3 x 5 = 15 work has been done. However, even if you apply a force of 10, if the object does not move, then 10 x 0 = 0 work. In other words, no work has been done.

Power is the amount of work done per unit of time.

Now let's look at power rate.

What is the work rate?Work per hourIn other words, if you complete 15 tasks in 3 seconds, your power is 5 (15 divided by 3).

Expressed as a formula

Force x distance ÷ time = power

We can see that it becomes like this.

Also, distance ÷ time = speed, so

Force x Speed = Power

This formula is created. In other words, even if your strength is strong, if your speed is slow, your power will be low. Conversely, even if your speed is fast, if your strength is weak, your power will not increase.

In other words, power is not only force but alsoProportional to speedThat's it!

Jumping power = Muscle strength x Initial velocity of jump

If we convert this power into jumping force, the force isMuscle strength,Velocity is the speed at which you jump, in other wordsInitial velocity when jumpingWe can say that.

Jumping power = Muscle strength x Initial velocity of jump

In other words, jumping ability is not just a matter of muscle strength,Initial velocity when jumpingis also important.

The faster you jump, the higher you jump!

Also, swinging your arms or lowering your center of gravity when jumping can help improve your jump record. These movements are also intended to help you move faster.
