Introduction of all teams in the Italian Volleyball Superlegga 2024/25 season

September 18, 2024

What is Superrega?

Italy's top professional men's volleyball league. It is considered one of the top men's leagues in the world, alongside Poland and Russia.

This season, 12 teams will participate. The regular round will be played in a home and away round-robin format, with the top eight teams then advancing to the playoffs.

Regular Round: October 29, 2024 - March 2, 2025
Playoffs: March-May 2025

Three Japanese players will also be playing this season: Ishikawa Yuki (Perugia), Otsuka Tatsunobu (Milan), and Tarumi Yume (Cisterna).

・Modena (8)
・Cisterna (9)

Grottazzolina (promoted from A2)

Grottazzolina

Official name: Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina

Hometown: Grottazzolina (Marche)
Home Arena:Pala Savelli

The team won the Serie A2 last season and joined the Superlegaga this season. Upon promotion, they brought in veterans with experience playing in the Superlegaga, such as S. Zhukowski, OH Antonov (Italy), and OP Petkovic (Serbia). However, to remain in the league, it is also essential for the young new players to perform well. For the past two seasons, teams that were promoted have failed to remain and have been relegated, so I hope they will do their best.

Position: Opposite
Height: 199cm
Nationality: Serbian

A veteran opposite who is expected to be the team's point getter. Two seasons ago, he played for Padova in the Superlegas and supported the team alongside Japan's Ai Takahashi. His spikes and serves are his weapons, bringing momentum to the team.

Taranto

Official name: Gioiella Prisma Taranto

Hometown: Taranto (Apulia)
Home Arena:PalaMazzola

The only southern Italian club in the Superlegaga this season, which has managed to remain in the league since being promoted in the 2021/22 season. Although last season's main players have left, it will be interesting to see how well new players such as OP Gironi (Italy), OH Hofer (Canada), and MB Alonso (Cuba), who have returned to the team for the first time in three seasons, perform.

#17 Jan Zimmermann

The photo was taken at Monza

Position: Setter
Height: 190cm
Nationality: German

Setter for the German national team. Played for Monza two seasons ago and Padova three seasons ago. He is good friends with Ai Takahashi, who was his teammate at Padova, and they even exchanged uniforms at the Paris Olympics. He is of course a highly skilled setter, but his strength is his interpersonal skills, which allow him to liven up the team with his mood-making skills.

Padua

Official name: Sonepar Padova

Hometown: Padua (Veneto)
Home Arena:Kioene Arena

Ai Takahashi, Yuki Ishikawa, Yu Koshigawa, and last season Wataru Taniguchi were also members of this club, which is a favorite club for Japanese players in Italy (lol). In terms of the number of Japanese players that have played there, it is on par with Paris Volleyball in France. As a mid-level club in the league, they aim to advance to the playoffs or at least remain in the league, so many players will perform well here and step up. This season, attention will be focused on how new members OP Maslovic (Serbia) and OH Sedlacek (Croatia) will perform, with OH Porro (Italy) at the center, who performed very well last season.

Featured Players

#17 Luca Porro

Position: Outside hitter
Height: 194cm
Nationality: Italian

After making his Superlegaga debut last season, this young star quickly rose to the Italian national team at the Paris Olympics, playing a key role in supporting his team. Although he is not tall, he has a high level of balance between offense and defense, and his technique is outstanding, with a powerful serve that can be adjusted to suit different speeds. His playing style is similar to that of Japan's Takahashi Ai. His older brother, Paolo, also plays as a setter for Milan in the Superlegaga, and his younger brother, Simone, also plays as a setter in A2.

Cisterna

Official name: Cisterna Volley

Hometown: Cisterna (Lazio)
Home Arena:Palasport

Like Padova, Cisterna is a strong team, but has not been able to make it to the playoffs in recent seasons. As with last season, they will continue to focus on S. Baranovic (Italy), OP Faure (France), and OH Ramon (Spain), and it will be interesting to see how new Japanese player Tarumi Yume will fit in. Ishikawa Yuki played for two seasons at their predecessor team, Latina. They are also the Superlegago club with the best access from the capital, Rome.

Featured Players

#11 Theo Fall

Position: Opposite
Height: 202cm
Nationality: French

A young opposite for the French national team. At the Paris Olympics, he came on as a substitute in the quarterfinals against Germany and was instrumental in the team's comeback, helping them win the gold medal. He is expected to continue to play an active role as a point getter for the team, just like last season. He was the best scorer in the regular season last year.

Japanese players

#9 Yume Tarumi

Photo: Cisterna Volley

Position: Outside hitter
Height: 187cm

Tarumi was loaned out from Osaka Bulleteon and got the chance to play in Italy. He didn't have many opportunities to play in the Japanese V-League, but he was a starter in the Kurowashiki Cup when the national team players were absent, and he won the Best Outside Hitter Award, so he has the skills. To be a starter for Cisterna, he will need to be good at cleats, of course, but I think the key is how well he can show off his defense and serve. I'm looking forward to seeing him face off in Italy against his high school classmate Tatsunobu Otsuka (who plays for Milan).
