Italy kept the USA at bay and won the tournament in straight sets. OP Egonu was the leading scorer for both teams with 22 points, and MB Danesi had 11 block points, including four, to overwhelm the USA. OP Thompson played well for the USA, scoring 8 points, but they were unable to stop the Italians from gaining momentum.
Italy won the championship with a perfect record, winning all matches from the qualifying rounds. This was the first medal for the Italian women's team and the first gold medal for the Italian men's and women's team.
Although the defeated United States missed out on a consecutive victory, it won a medal for the fifth consecutive Olympics, dating back to the 2008 Beijing Games.
