Mozic: "Playing in Japan is a truly beautiful memory" Interview at the VNL France tournament

June 24, 2023

On the second day of the second week of the Volleyball Nations League, the match between Slovenia and Canada was played, with Slovenia winning 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-14). After the match, Slovenian player Rok Mojic gave us some comments.

-How was the match?

Mojic: It was a very important win. It wasn't easy. I had some problems in the first and second sets and I wasn't very focused in those sets, but I managed to solve it in the last set and get an important win.

-What do you think of this year's Slovenian national team?

Mojic: Right now, things are going very well. It's very important that we have five wins. We are going to change the formation for the next game. Now, Cheby, Urnall and I are all playing, which is different from how we used to be, so we are still feeling our way around and trying to find the best form. But I think it will go well. We have another game tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes, but we are very positive about the outlook for this summer.

- I'd like to ask you about the VNL Japan Tournament. You played in Nagoya two weeks ago. How was it?

Mojic: It was great. Everyone was so nice and treated us so well. The food was all delicious and the matches were amazing. I'm looking forward to coming back for the Olympic Qualifiers.

-Did you receive any gifts from your Japanese fans?

Mojic: Yes. I also took a lot of photos and signed a lot of autographs. It was a really beautiful memory to play in Japan. It was a pity that we didn't play against Japan and couldn't play in front of a full stadium, but I got to see the Slovenian supporters and it was a really beautiful sight.

-What do you think about this year's Japanese team?

Mozic: They are very strong. Japan has great players, and I know three who played in the Italian league: Ishikawa, Takahashi, and Nishida. They are great players, and Japan is a very technically good team. They keep coming at you with their blocks and defense, so if you can't attack Japan with your serve, it will be a very difficult match. In fact, they are very strong because they are winning all their matches. They are definitely one of the favorites to win this year's VNL.

-I would like to ask you about Naoya Fujiwara (4th year student at Chuo University), who was dispatched to your team, Verona, for a short period of time and trained with you. What kind of person was he?

Mojic: Naoya was a very nice guy. Like most Japanese people I've seen, he was very kind, always smiling, and always willing to help if you needed anything. I have fond memories of playing with him, and I wish him the best.

-What was he like as a volleyball player?

Mozic: It was good. I think it's still difficult to play as a starter in the Italian league, but I think his technical aspects, such as his attack, were good. To me, many Japanese players have similar styles, so I think he also has potential.
