Italian men's volleyball league: Vibo and Milan both lose in the first half of the fifth round

November 10, 2021

The fifth round of the first half of the Italian men's volleyball Serie A Super League has ended. Yuto Nishida's Vibo Valentia played against Cisterna, and Yuki Ishikawa's Milan played against Civitanova, losing 1-3 and 0-3, respectively.

Vibo Valentia vs Cisterna 1-3 (23-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-20)

Nishida's Vibo Valentia, with one win and three losses, played away against Cisterna, who also had one win. They were an opponent they wanted to beat, but once again were unable to win a close set. Vibo Valentia managed to bench Cisterna's veteran OH Lanza midway through the second set, but the young player Rinaldi, who is the same age as Nishida, was in top form when he took his place. Also, OH Marr (Canada), who was on the opposite side of the field, contributed to the team's victory by scoring 23 points with a spike and three aces.

Nishida scored 20 points, the most on the team, and was not blocked at all, but made five mistakes. As in the previous match, he was unable to score a service ace. The Brazilian duo of Mauricio and Douglas, who were both overhands, also struggled with attacks that day, with the attack success rate of the three on the side being less than 50%. It seemed like the opponent was picking up the balls a lot. And the spike mistakes at key moments were painful.

The next match will be against Ravenna, who are still undefeated in the league. I really hope they can win.

Milano vs Civitanova 0-3 (26-28, 26-28, 23-25)

Milan, from Ishikawa, played last season's champions, Civitanova, at home. They wanted to somehow get a win, as the opponent's ace, Juan Torena, was unable to play the full game due to injury, but the champions were strong as expected. Milan was successful in suppressing the opponent's powerful attacks and serves with their strong defense in this match, but Civitanova's middle players, Simon (Cuba) and Anzani (Italy), were in top form (and of course the setter, Dececco (Argentina), was amazing), and they took the lead in the match. Nevertheless, Milan also gave up a strong serve to the Civitanova court in the first set, with Patri (France) and Porro (Italy) in the second set. However, they were unable to score a single point in the final stage and were sadly defeated in straight sets.

Ishikawa personally played well, with a 50% attack success rate and only conceding two points, but because the opponent was targeting him with serves, his opportunities to participate in the attack were limited. If OH Jaskier (USA) on the opposite side could work a little harder on both offense and defense and reduce the burden on Ishikawa, I think it would be easier for the team. Good luck lol.

Milan's next opponent is Perugia, who came in second last season. They are strong teams, but they are not opponents that they absolutely cannot beat, so I hope they can hang on and rise to the top!!!

Other notable match results

Monza vs Piacenza 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-17)

Piacenza, who had been undefeated up until this point, lost to Monza in straight sets, leaving Perugia as the only team with an undefeated record on the fifth day of the league. Piacenza's Laguzia (Turkey), who had been a great player up until this point, was thoroughly suppressed with a success rate of 241 TP and 3 T, and the other side attackers were unable to break through Monza's floor defense. Meanwhile, Monza's two main players, OP Grozelle (Germany) and OH Javoronok (Czech Republic), continued to score a lot of points that day. The two scored 35 points between them and led the team to victory.
