Watching the East Japan Intercollegiate Championships

July 4, 2016

Last weekend, I went to Sumida Ward General Gymnasium to watch the East Japan Intercollegiate Championships.
I went on the last day, and due to schedule conflicts, I only saw the men's third place match (full) and the men's and women's finals (part). I couldn't see the women's third place match.

The first thing that surprised me was the long line in front of the venue. Seeing how many people gathered even without NEXT4, I felt that volleyball was really popular. And as usual, there were a lot of young female customers. There were almost no guys like me there lol

Please see the links below for the starting lineups for each match

Men’s 3: Tokai University – Chuo University 1 – 3 (25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 26-28)

Although the points were close in the first set, Tokai University was in control overall.
The difference in the setters was especially noticeable. Ryu (3rd year, from Higashi Fukuoka High School) from Tokai University was able to use the middle effectively, and Sato (3rd year, Hirosaki Technical High School)'s quick shots had an outstanding success rate. On the other hand, Chuo University's setter Yanagida (2nd year, Toyo High School) was not able to let the attackers hit the ball comfortably.

In the middle of the second set, Chuo University changed the setter to Yamashita (3, Tokai University 4). His tosses were not good in the beginning, but gradually the tosses started to get higher, and the attack success rate (especially the middle) increased. On the other hand, Tokai University's spike mistakes were noticeable and they lost momentum.

After that, Chuo University was in the lead. In the fourth set, Tokai University had a chance to take the lead, but Chuo University was excited by Takechi's (3 Seijo) super reception and took the set to the end of the match.

Women's 3-point playoff: Nippon Sport Science University 3-1 Tokai University (27-25 19-25 25-23 25-21)

Women's Final: University of Tsukuba 0 - 3 Tohoku Fukushi University (22-25 27-29 19-25)

I watched the women's final from the middle of the second set. Tohoku Fukushi University was amazing. They were hitting the ball from a high point with a fast tempo, and their defense was very solid. The libero's presence in particular was incredible. They were also very imaginative, tossing balls and serve receives that came back to the net, and they were a very fun team to watch.

Men's Final: Waseda 1-3 Nippon Sport Science University (21-25 32-30 20-25 20-25)

This one was even shorter, and I was only able to watch until halfway through the first set.
Nippon Sport Science University had a fresh lineup with three of the seven starters being first-year students, but they were strong.
On the other hand, Waseda's spikers seemed to lack firepower.

That's it!
