Miyaura Kento: "These two games have given me a lot of confidence" - Interview after the VNL match against Argentina

June 25, 2023

On the fifth day of the second week of the Nations League, the Japanese men's volleyball team played against Argentina and won 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 31-33, 22-25, 15-12). After the match, we asked Japan's opposite player, Kento Miyaura, to give us some comments.

-How was the match?

Miyaura: Today, I was able to correct my serve (compared to yesterday), and although I made some mistakes with my spikes, I think it went well. In the previous match against Brazil, I was a little hesitant at the beginning, and I didn't swing through, so I held back a beat and completed the block. (Today) I was able to accept that and focus on the block while swinging my arm through firmly.

- You maintained good form throughout the match, but your last spike mistake in the third set was a rare miss that went way off the court. What was your intention behind that play and how it ended up like that?

Miyaura: I was in the back court, and the toss was a little close to the net. I had a strong desire to make the shot, and I could see that I was surrounded by blocks, so I had no choice but to hit it. I think I had other options, but I should have been more calm there. Even if I hit it up, there was the issue of the angle, and I might have been able to block it out if I had hit it straight. I think I should have stayed calm there.

-On the Argentina court was Zerba, your teammate at Nysa (Poland). I think this was your first time competing with your teammates on the national team. How did it feel?

Miyaura: I was looking forward to that today, and it was really fun to be able to play against Nico (Zerba) in that environment. I tried not to think about it too much, but I still think I enjoyed it.

- Now that you've had the experience of being a starter in two games at the France tournament, how do you want to perform at the next tournament in the Philippines?

Miyaura: There are still many areas where I need to improve, so I will start by improving those areas. Also, these two games have given me a lot of confidence, so I would like to use that to grow further and play with real confidence.
