France's Brizard: "I don't think any country wants to play against Japan right now" - Interview at the VNL France tournament

June 28, 2023

On the fourth day of the second week of the Volleyball Nations League, France played against Cuba, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-20). After the match, we asked Antoine Brizard, the setter for the French national team, for a comment.

-How was today's game?

Brizard: It was a good match. We played well. We knew that Cuba was a completely different team to Argentina (who we played last time). So we were able to reduce our mistakes a lot and create a rhythm from our serves and spikes with few mistakes. I think it was a good game.

-How did you move on from the loss to Argentina two days ago?

Brizard: Yes, we were very frustrated because we didn't play the way we wanted to. We had good first two sets in that match and then things started to fall apart. It was a tough loss, but we knew we weren't at that level yet. So the goal today was to find the rhythm, play better and take better care of the ball. I think we did well in those areas today.

-What is the difference between playing for the French national team and for your club team Piacenza (Italy)?

Brizard: It's completely different. Piacenza has a lot of very physical players, like Real (Brazil), Simon (Cuba) and Romano (Italy). Here (with France) we are more fundamental and more stable. But both are great teams to play against.

-Did you know that many Japanese fans were waiting for you to come to Nagoya? (laughs)

Brizard: No (laughs). Sorry, I needed a vacation.

-What do you think about this year's Japanese team?

Brizard: I think they have a great team. We had a really, really tough match at the World Championships last year. You can see that they have grown a lot since then. They are a great team in every aspect, and I don't think any country wants to play against Japan right now. Their games are also fun to watch. Their playing style is great, and I really admire how they've made such a crazy comeback since they were in a slump about 10 years ago. I think they'll continue to improve over the next few years, especially in the time leading up to the Paris Olympics. Personally, I hope they don't get too good (laughs). But they're really great.
