Cubans in the Polish League

January 20, 2017

Without exception, Cuban players are wreaking havoc in the world's top leagues, including Leon in the Russian Super League, Juan Torena and Hernandez in the Italian Serie A, and Simon and Real in the Brazilian Super League (Escobar, a Cuban who currently plays for Suntory, was the top scorer in the Brazilian league last season). And a promising Cuban player has arrived in the Polish league since last year: Hidalgo Oliver (pictured).

Although he is 195cm tall and small to medium-sized for a volleyball player, he boasts outstanding scoring skills, and although he plays as a wing-shoulder, he is the top scorer in the Polish league (he is also number one in both attack and serve). Thanks to his performance, his team, Jastrzebski Węgyel, is also ranked 4th in the league. His play is not only powerful, but also soft, and his style of play is somewhat similar to that of France's Nugapet (and he looks somewhat similar too (lol)).

Since Cuba does not allow players who play abroad to play for the national team, Oliva aims to obtain German citizenship and play for Germany, just as Juan Torena plays for Italy (he played in the German Bundesliga for the past three seasons). Therefore, the taping on his right hand is the same color as the German flag. Germany's main scorer Grosser announced his retirement from the national team after last year's Olympic qualifiers. Oliva will have enough talent to fill his gap. It will be interesting to see if the combination of Oliva and Campa (German setter) as in the video above will come to be seen on the national team.
