Poland's Szarbuk: "Japanese fans are a bit crazy"

June 18, 2023

The men's match between Poland and Argentina was held in Plock, Poland on Friday, June 16th local time.

After the match, we spoke to Poland's Artur Szabuk about the Nations League tournament in Nagoya.

-How was the Nagoya tournament?

Šarupuk: The tournament was well organized, so we were able to play comfortably. We also felt a lot of support from the Japanese fans. The last match against Serbia was the worst, so we definitely could have played one more match, but the other three matches we played very well. We are now preparing for our next match, but we would like to play in Japan again.

-What did you think of the Japanese fans?

Szalbuk: It was amazing. But Japanese fans are a little crazy because we got some presents, but we don't get that in Poland. But I was very happy to get the presents. There were few spectators at our games, but the Japanese games were full and created a great atmosphere. Still, I was really happy that they came to watch our games wearing the Polish flag and uniform.

-Compared to Poland, did the venue seem a little quiet considering the number of people there?

Szabuk: It was a very big hall, and Japanese fans didn't shout and cheer like Polish fans do. (Pointing at the Polish fans in the venue) Look, they're crazy (laughs). They call out to us like that. Volleyball is really popular in Poland, so of course the way they cheer is different from Japan, but I was very happy to be able to play with the support of Japanese fans and win the match.

-I saw your Instagram. It seems like you're enjoying your time in Japan even outside of the court.

Sharpuk: We only had one day off in Nagoya, but we made time to eat a lot of different things. Sushi, ramen, and "Ominoyaki"?

-Okonomiyaki?

Scharbuk: Yes, that's it! I also went to some typical Japanese places when I had time. Personally, I love traveling, but I had to focus on training and matches first and foremost, so I didn't have time to do anything more in Nagoya.

-What was the most delicious thing you had in Nagoya?

Szabuk: Sushi. We are big fans of sushi and eat a lot of it in Poland, and we try it every time we come to Japan. The style is different from the Polish one. We also had some really good ramen at Nagoya Station. Bartek Kurek recommended the restaurant to us, because he plays in Nagoya. These two things were amazing.
